“Get in the Ring” is a concept that my wife and I started in 2003. Both of us, as collegiate and professional athletes, place a great deal of importance on athletics and the community and opportunities that it can provide for the youth.

“Get in the Ring” is a concept that Dori and I started to discuss as far back as 2003. Both of us, as collegiate and professional athletes, have always placed a great deal of importance on athletics and the community and opportunities that it can provide, especially for those at a younger age. But more so than that, the confidence built through physical activity is something that you don’t find through many other avenues. Now having young kids of our own, we really wanted to do something with this. I’ve made a list of what we hope to accomplish with “Get in the Ring” and, as always, I’m open to any suggestions and/or input.

  • Design and implement a 10 week / 10 session progressive program that emphasizes teamwork as well as a strong sense of personal confidence through a fitness program specifically designed for the age group.

  • The program will use Boxing drills (NOT FIGHTING / SPARRING) to be done on bags, with mitts and with a partner. No contact though. As a retired pro fighter, I really believe boxing to have been the most positive influence, with regard to outside stimulus, on my self-esteem and confidence at a time in my youth that I struggled with those issues.

  • I want to set up programming that makes this something that they actually enjoy. We’ll use things readily available so that there’s always a way to do things on your own and with the family. Examples would be old tires, milk cartons… pretty much anything you can think of.

  • We’ll cover things such as nutrition, the importance of seeing things through via commitment and dedication, budgeting time and respect for you and for others. But, all in such a way that it’s understandable for the kids.

  • Being that this is a progressive program, we’ll ramp up to a “finale” in which your kids will train the parents on the last day. They’ll also complete an event that I set up specifically for them. Not unlike one of my Muddy Watters Trail Series events, but obviously age group specific. It will include much of what we trained with over the course of our 10 weeks together. They’ll also be completing a staggered 10k (6.2 miles). The distance will be covered in segments over the course of the program. The TOTAL will come out to 6.2 miles.

  • Parents are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend the sessions. In addition to myself, my wife will be participating as well.

We really look forward to this, our “inaugural” run through of the program. Again, we look forward to feedback throughout the duration of the program as this is something that we’re venturing into as well. I look forward to the kids teaching us as much, if not more, than we’re teaching them. Jeff & Dori
