The Math Behind the Game is a 3-day, block-mode coding intensive that teaches real mathematical concepts — coordinate geometry, variables and rates of change, and inequalities — through the lens of building an actual platformer game in Code.org's Game Lab. Rather than treating math and coding as separate subjects, each day pairs one core math idea with the specific game mechanic it powers: coordinates become character placement, addition-inside-a-loop becomes gravity, and inequalities become win/lose conditions. Students leave with a complete, playable game they built and can explain, not just a game they followed steps to assemble.
. Program Overview
Program Name The Math Behind the Game
Target Age Range 9–13
Duration 3 Days, 2 hours per day (fixed)
Format Virtual, live-instructed
Platform Code.org Game Lab — Block Mode and Google Classroom
. Technical Requirements & Platform Notes
• Engine: Code.org Game Lab, browser-based, no installation required.
• Command Center: Google Classroom for mission briefs, starter links, and project submission.
• Age-rating note: Code.org officially rates Game Lab for ages 13+. This program targets ages 9–13 by deliberately restricting delivery to block mode (never typed code) and by front-loading extra explanation on the course's hardest concept (the draw loop, Day 2). This is a considered trade-off, not an oversight, and should be disclosed to parents/guardians as part of program marketing.
