Bring your rough (or polished!) draft in any genre to a free-flowing discussion inspired by Angelique Stevens’ master class on Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu. Writing prompts to consider as you create:
Writing prompts
Owusu structures the “Liminal” chapter using the Blue Chair as the inciting incident and notes the time away from it; one day after, one week after, three weeks after, etc. Think about one event that was a singular moment of change in your life, then write in the style of this chapter.
Several chapters focus on language: “Failures of Language,” “Fault Zone Voice,” etc. On page 163, Owusu writes, “I hadn’t told George that I had used a few other accents– voices– before settling into my current one. I hadn’t wanted to tell him my voice is a fault zone that is really multiple voices that grate against one another. I didn’t think he’d like that about me. It would, I believed, lead him to wonder if my voice– the voice that told him I loved him– was to be trusted.” Write about a time when you used “other voices.” Consider this idea of “voices” as metaphorical, emotional, metaphorical, etc.
Facilitated by Alison Meyers, this virtual class is streamed via Zoom.
